THROUGHOUT much of Wychavon there can have been little surprise when council tax demands were opened. Both the County Council and West Mercia Police had forewarned us of their increased demands.
On the other hand officials and councillors of the District Council had rightly sought congratulations on having limited their increase to 2.5 per cent.
The general mood within Pershore has been rather different. Many people - in my experience - were surprised to find that Pershore Town Council has found it necessary to impose a rise of 18 per cent. Some are puzzled, but many more are indignant.
Voters are, of course, not in the best position to assess the town's needs and liabilities. They lack the information on which to base sound judgements. I cannot believe that councillors have been happy to make such an increased demand. But it would be courteous and, more especially, democratic for them to offer a comprehensive explanation.
Can we look forward to hearing from the mayor? Reticence is likely only to be misconstrued.
MR J D MASSINGHAM, Pershore.
