KEMPSEY United Reserves earned a trip to Morgan Aero 8 when they defeated visitors Fromes Hill 3-1 in the second round of the Soccer Site Malvern League's President's Cup.
In a game which had to be restaged following the abandonment of the original tie due to an injury to a Fromes Hill player, the hard bumpy pitch made controlled football very difficult. It was the visitors who took the lead when Dave Eaton hit a left foot shot from the edge of the area into the bottom corner of the Kempsey net. Kempsey equalised when a long ball over the Fromes Hill defence found 17-year-old Andy Martin who calmly lobbed the ball over the keeper.
Play was fairly even with both teams having chances to take the lead before Kempsey snatched the lead in the final quarter of the game. A fine run forward by Ryan Leigh saw him evade several tackles before smashing the ball home from close range.
Kempsey got on top and it took several fine saves by Fromes Hill keeper Matt Howard, who had an excellent match, to keep them in the game. But even he could do nothing to deny Kempsey a third goal when Steve Freear ran onto a through ball and thumped the ball home.
In Division One, second in the table Green Dragon took advantage of the fact that Bull Allstars' game with St Peters was postponed to draw within two points of the leaders following a hard fought victory at Bell Inn 98 by 4-1. When Mark Herbert pulled a goal back for Bell Inn 98 to cut Green Dragon's lead to 2-1 it looked like the possibility of a shock result could be on the cards. Green Dragon remained composed and increased their lead almost immediately and added a further goal just before the end.
Their goal scorers were Stewart Graham, Darren Gwynne, Jason Westmacott and an own goal by Paul Allen.
If Green Dragon maintain their form, which has seen them only lose to Bull Allstars and draw with Kempsey United Reserves, the top of the table clash between the two teams on May 4 could turn out to be the title decider.
Morgan Aero 8 kept up their good form, which has earned them third place, with a 2-0 victory over Eeore with goals by Mike Griffin and Richard Bird. Both teams are to be commended for getting the game played as when they arrived at the Dines Green pitch they found it unplayable, due to vandalism, and they quickly raced back to Malvern. Luckily there was a vacant pitch at Lower Howsell Road which allowed the game to go ahead.
Club AC 30 moved up to fourth place with a comfortable 4-0 victory over visitors Dynamo Ledbury. Their goal scorers were John Haywood, Aaron Parr, Andy Wilshaw and Jason Payton Smith. Club AC 30 keeper Andy Hall saved a penalty when the score was 3-0.
Worcester Juniors beat Talbot Head 3-1 in what was a fairly even game with Worcester Juniors not making the game safe until the final seconds of the game. Jamie Lawrence gave them the lead with a shot from fully 35 yards in the 15th minute. He then turned provider when he broke through the visitor's defence before unselfishly squaring the ball to Chris White who had the simple task of tapping the ball home to make it 2-0 at half time.
Matt Cooke scored for Talbot Head in the second half and the game could have gone either way before Dave Lammas made the points safe for Worcester Juniors when he smashed home a 25 yard free kick in the last minute.
In the remaining Division One game Brewery went down 2-5 to Madresfield. In a hard fought game not helped by the bumpy pitch and fielding a depleted side, Brewery were to rue a missed penalty by Gavin Locke at a vital stage of the game which could have possibly altered the final result.
Both Brewery goals were scored by Matthew Dance with Madresfield's goals coming from Adam Morse, Sam Black, Steven Brookes and Matt Brookes (two).
In the U18s Division, Hereford Lads Club kept up their remorseless march to an undefeated season with a 6-1 victory at Barnards Green Juniors.
Their goals came from Chris Mortlock, Dan Crowe, Tom Maclean, Paul Marsh and two from Ben Arnold. Barnards Green Juniors' reply came from a Richard Foley penalty.
The highlight of Libbery Wanderers 3-1 victory over Battledown Saracens was a spectacular goal in the 10th minute by their player Rick Comb, he controlled the ball on his foot with his back to goal before swivelling and lashing home an unstoppable shot from distance. The same player added a second with Libbery's other goal coming from Tim Lewis. Freddie Rees de Ponte scored Saracens' response.
