IT is said that the Swan Theatre wastes materials. Storage space is limited, but where materials can be economically re-used or recycled, they are.

We are accused of wasting money installing a new bar and refurbishing the restaurant. These are now generating more income, offering an improved service to patrons. They are thriving, profitable enterprises.

We are lambasted for creating a secure Box Office area (required by the Data Protection Act) and moving the sweets. Increasingly Box Office business is conducted by telephone. A closed area for staff to work is essential if we are to maximise sales.

It is claimed that the theatre was closed in June and July. In fact there were productions by three amateur theatre companies, shows from the WI and Academy Dance, a new writing festival, street theatre and a children's play scheme.

It is said the theatre has too many staff. There are eight full timers, 7.75 part-time and casual staff (full-time equivalents) and seven seasonal staff.

This is not an over-manned organisation. Comparisons with similar theatres will demonstrate this.

The theatre is well managed. The McKinnon report says: "It must be obvious to all parties that any idea of WST operating more 'economically' while offering the same level of service is unfeasible."

GERALD HARRIS,,

Chairman of the Board,

Worcester Swan Theatre.

I WAS distressed to hear that the Swan Theatre in Worcester is in danger of closing because a grant is being withdrawn. If this theatre closes it will be a blow to the heart of culture in this area.

A visit to the Swan is always a treat. The staff are very pleasant and there are good views of the stage.

MRS ROSEMARY SUMNER,
