IAN Britton was happy with the way Kidderminster Harriers gave their fans encouragement for the coming season with a last-gasp 3-2 win over Nationwide League Division Two new boys Cheltenham Town.
The Harriers boss, however, believes his side can improve and has told the players not to get carried away with their victory over the Robins, who are managed by former Aggborough chief Graham Allner.
Britton said: "We can do a lot better. There's a lot of things still to work on, but it's encouraging."
The win was a timely boost for Kidderminster whose previous six friendlies had produced just one victory.
Britton said: "We wanted to get off to a good start because it was against Cheltenham, we were in front of our own fans and it was our last game before we begin our league programme.
"I've always been confident, but I've said pre-season results mean nothing because if you get your first win under your belt in the league programme then all the pre-season programme goes out of the window and it doesn't make any difference."
Kidderminster, with midfielder Sean Flynn marking his debut with a man-of-the-match performance, were without a injured Scott Stamps (ankle), Adie Smith (side), Ian Foster (shins) and Mark Blake (Achilles), but
Britton reported that all except Blake would be fit for the match with Lincoln.
Harriers went ahead in the 28th minute when Drewe Broughton converted a penalty which had been awarded when he was pushed in the back by Steve Jones.
The Robins equalised on the stroke of half time through Paul Brayson.
The match burst into life in the second half with Allner's men being given a let-off when a cross shot from Ian Joy hit the bar before Dean Bennett blasted the rebound over.
A minute later Cheltenham took the lead when a Tony Naylor header rebounded off the bar and Damian Spencer nodded the ball over the line.
Harriers, however, equalised on 72 minutes when Broughton was given enough time and space to finish off a cross from Bennett.
The match looked to be heading for a draw when Bo Henriksen outstripped the Robins defence to fire a low shot past keeper Steve Book.
Kidderminster: Brock, Ayres, Williams, Hinton, Bennett (Doyle, 78), Parrish (Shilton, 78), Broughton, Henriksen, Joy, Flynn, Lower. Attendance 1,063.
