IF M Burcher insists on writing about a subject (You Say, December 11) he should at least get his facts right.

There is no similarity between what I do for a living and what nurses and doctors do. Don't make the mistake of comparing us.

Firefighters would no more leave an incident than nurses would a ward. Unfortunately for them, the Government knows this and capitalises on this fact.

We have been forced into this course of action. None of us likes it.

By the way, a surgeon earns three times as much as me, but who would you rather turn up when your house is on fire?

As for "hanging my head in shame", I am intensely proud of every firefighter I have ever served with - and always will be.

No more so than when a pathetic Government forced us into striking. Those "mundane" tasks you mention save lives.

Oh, and New York firefighters retire after 20 years. We have to serve 30.

And if you want to talk about heroes, I am not a hero, but I've spent the last 20 years working with heroes.

Who on earth do you think died at Sun Valley in 1993? Who do you think died at Kings Cross? Who do you think died at Gillander Street? Who do you think died in the flats in Egbaston?

Who do you think died in at the factory in Leicester? Who do you think died in Hurcott Mill in Kidderminster?

The problem with people like M Burcher is that they don't know the facts. But if you want to know the facts talk to a firefighter, they'll give you the truth.

If you want to carry on being misled, listen to the Government lies or read a national tabloid.
