A man who got married on a wage of 15s a week and who has vivid memories of Redditch on Mafeking night celebrated his Golden wedding on Christmas Day.
He is Mr Oscar Rivington, aged 77 years, who with his 79-year-old wife lives at Pevensey Road, Bognor Regis.
Mr and Mrs Rivington were married at St Luke's Church, Headless Cross, Christmas Day 1902.
Mrs Rivington was a native of Redditch and was born in the 'Old Round House', Mount Pleasant.
For many years she was employed in the fishing tackle industry. His first wage was 1 d per hour for a nine-hour shift a night.
He came to Redditch in 1900 just when the Boer War was being fought and he remembers the contingent of militia which went from the drill hall.
