REDDITCH councillors have added their weight to the demand for a strict speed limit on Donnington Close, Church Hill, to make the road safer for children.
They voted to back a residents' petition calling for the erection of 10mph warning signs in the new town close - a decision that at least one councillor believes will open the flood gates to a forest of similar notices.
Householders in the close are concerned there will be a tragedy unless visiting drivers can be persuaded to slow down.
They say the existing 30mph limit is far too high to protect children who play in the "dead end" part of the close.
The road is very windy and poorly signposted and they claim strangers are just not aware they are approaching a dead end and so fail to slow down.
Councillor Alan Jones thought a decision to lower the speed limit would set a bad precedent.
"Everyone else will think if Donnington Close is having one, then why can't we? And the more signs there are, the more people are likely to ignore them," he said.
