A WARNING has been given that a Redditch road could be a "death trap" for pensioners living nearby because of increased traffic.

So Chapel Street in Headless Cross, which will contain several bungalows for old people, should be turned into a cul-de-sac, town planners heard.

Redditch planning committee chairman Horace Shakels gave his warning when the committee was considering the proposal planned by the council itself.

"It has to be closed first - before any development - otherwise it's a death trap for the people living there," Councillor Shakels told the meeting.

Headless Cross Residents' Association had told the council the whole plan could be jeopardised if they did not consider closing Chapel Street to through traffic.

"This would create a cul-de-sac with main access from Birchfield Road," said residents in a letter to the council.
