1802: On Wednesday, the Right Hon.Viscount Nelson, accompanied by Sir William and Lady Hamilton, arrived in Oxford where the Freedom of the city was presented to his Lordship. The following day, an honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law was conferred on his Lordship by the university. He and his party then travelled on to Gloucester. His Lordship appeared in high health and spirits.
A Caution - A number of counterfeit seven-shilling pieces have, within the last week, been circulated in this city with infinite success and, consequently, much mischief. As they are likely from their weighing the full weight and excellent appearance to escape detection, we think it proper to put the public on their guard. They can only be discovered by a comparison with a good one when it will be found they are considerably thicker.
Lost from a carriage on the road from Kidderminster to Worcester, a portmanteau black leather truck with "A.M.Ginnis" engraved on the brass plate. Whoever has found it and will bring it to the Hop Pole Inn, Foregate Street, Worcester, shall receive a one guinea reward.
1902: A Brave Boy - A little lad named Speers fell into the King's Head Locks of the canal at Sidbury two days ago. Another boy, Leonard Brown, son of Mr Edwin Brown of 23 Derby Road, Worcester, jumped in with his clothes on and, after a struggle, saved the lad's life.
Robert Percy Lane, aged 13, of Hylton Road, Worcester, was sentenced at the City Police Court to eight strokes of the birch rod for stealing 11d. from the till at the shop of Mr George Yeates, fruiterer, of Hylton Road. The boy admitted that he had been birched previously for stealing bread.
The 7th annual Ombersley, Fernhill and District Agricultural Show was held at Westwood Park, near Droitwich, and attracted a record number of many hundreds of entries for its equestrian, cattle, sheep and pig classes and also for its horticultural show. Several thousand people attended the event.
1952: The coming-of-age celebrations this week at Spetchley Park of Mr Robert L.C Berkeley, son of Capt. R.G.W Berkeley, recall the very long and close association of the Berkeley family with the city and county of Worcester.
At the Theatre Royal, Worcester, all next week - Jack Gillam presents a Gay, Glamorous and Hilarious Revue, "Naughty But Nice", a feast for the eye, starring Phil Strickland and the 10 Naughtigals.
A potato shortage has hit Worcestershire with merchants experiencing difficulty in obtaining supplies. In places, they are having to ration housewives to only 2 lbs each, and they fear a dearth of potatoes throughout the coming winter.
