MALVERN Town kept the pressure up at the top of the Express and Star West Midlands League Premier Division table, with this remarkable win at Wolverhampton Casuals.
WOLVERHAMPTON CASUALS 4, MALVERN TOWN 6
Although this was the sixth occasion that Town have scored more than five goals in a league fixture this season, it was also the first time they had conceded more than two goals since August.
Town struggled to get into their stride from the off and it was no surprise when Casuals took the lead after only six minutes. The home side might have extended their lead on a number of occasions, before Des Cox tapped home Malvern's equaliser after a drive from Rik Halion came back off the post in the 16th minute.
This marked a prolific spell for Malvern, as Luke Willetts drove home their second after
20 minutes, Dean Roberts added a third two minutes later and on the half hour mark, Chris Palmer curled the ball home from the edge of the box to put Town 4-1 up.
An injury to Craig Williams in the 35th minute added further instability to the Town defence and they allowed the home side to grab a lifeline on the stroke of half time.
With defences still all over the place, both sides should have added to the score in the opening minutes of the second half, but it was the Casuals who put themselves right back in the picture, when some slack defending allowed them to grab their third goal in the 52nd minute.
Malvern's response though was instantaneous, as Cox plundered his second goal in the 55th minute .
When Chris Palmer scored from an excellent free kick in the 63rd minute, to put Malvern 6-3 up, it looked all over for the home side.
However, Casuals refused to lie down and continued to keep themselves in the picture with a fourth goal, scored in the 74th minute.
Although, the home side continued to put Malvern under pressure right up until the final whistle, Malvern at last got themselves together defensively and held on to secure an important and remarkable three points
Town boss Neil Hunt said: "It might have been exciting for the spectators, but from the dug out it was hard to fathom out what was going on out there, in fact we said after the game that we felt we needed a seventh to make the game safe!
"There was no doubt that this was our worst defensive display of the season, but once again our forward play was excellent, let's just hope this was one off and we get our act together again next week."
