EVERY two hours one person in England commits suicide because of depression, but by seeking advice from NHS Direct this number could fall.
This week is National Depression Week and the nursing call-service wants to highlight how it can help people with mental health issues.
There are currently more than 120 members of staff covering five counties, including Worcestershire and Herefordshire.
They take around 30,000 calls a month, including 300 calls from people wanting either reassurance or advice about mental health services available.
"NHS Direct can prove to be a real lifeline for those who are suffering from mental health problems," said Tony Pezzaioli, psychiatric nurse at NHS Direct.
"It is available around the clock and provides a confidential service.
"We often hear from people who find it difficult to talk face-to-face about experiencing mental health problems, and calling NHS Direct can sometimes be their first step.
"We're here to give advice and to direct people towards the appropriate treatment or services."
National Depression Week takes place until Sunday, April 13, and is being organised by the Depression Alliance.
For advice on mental health issue from NHS Direct call 0845 4647.
