IT'S almost six years since city councillors abandoned plans to obliterate one of Worcester's most beautiful views, between the RNIB New College and Whittington with an office block.

The golden vista was preserved - but, as we report on P1 today, the development of the land is back on the agenda again, this time as a potential park-and-ride site.

Interestingly, the city's director of development services, Stuart McNidder, says the area is inappropriate because of the impact of the view of the Malvern Hill.

He also has an even more crushing criticism of the county council's choice of site - which comes as no surprise to anyone with even a limited knowledge of the city.

It's that the planned bus route into Worcester, along London Road is unsuitable. Too true.

And any idea that Newtown Road could be an alternative deserves a similar reaction.

We can almost hear the exasperation in Councillor Mike Layland's voice when he considers the potential bus service and asks: "If it doesn't go down London Road, how will it go down Newtown Road?"

The Evening News has long advocated that action has to be taken to reduce traffic congestion in the city.

The outlook, otherwise, is a city choked by traffic and fumes that eventually grinds to a halt.

But park-and-ride systems, operated from the wrong site, are a recipe for disaster.

On this one, the county council must think again.
