WORCESTERSHIRE preserved their place in Division Two of the English Counties Netball League with a 40-28 victory over Hampshire North.

It was a must-win situation for both teams at Prince Henry's High School, Evesham as the loser would be relegated to Division Three.

Coach Steve McCleod made two changes, Nina Russell replacing Julie Round at wing attack and Helen Webb replacing Karen Moore at goal attack.

Worcestershire made a bright start to lead 8-0. Hampshire had chances but most attempts rebounded from the ring to be caught by the home defence.

This lead helped settle a nervous home side. In the later stages Hampshire began to convert their chances and at the end of the first quarter Worcestershire led 11-6.

The second quarter started much the same with the home side scoring goals without reply. Worcestershire however were guilty of trying to pass the killer ball instead of sensibly retaining possession waiting for a good opportunity.

Frustrated

Hampshire gained possession several times but did not take advantage. Their defence got more frustrated as time went on and continually gave penalties away for contact in the circle. Worcestershire punished them to lead 21-11 at half-time.

Hampshire replaced their goal shooter in an attempt to claw their way back, but Worcestershire were still scoring regularly at the other end and led 32-18 at the end of the third quarter.

With 15 minutes to go and not having made any substitutions, the hosts allowed nervousness to creep into their game. Hampshire outscored them for the first time but it was too little too late, and a tired but jubilant squad walked off knowing their Division Two place was safe.

The U18s scored a convincing 55-23 win over a depleted Hampshire North side.

Worcestershire blitzed them in the first quarter to lead 17-5. In the second quarter they served up much of the same to go 33-10 up before taking their foot off the gas in the final two quarters.

This has been a successful season for the U18's and but for two defeats in matches they were capable of winning could have won their division.

The U16s were edged out 34-32. Worcestershire fought all the way with the lead changing hands a few times.

This has been the girls' first real taste of competition at this level but with some of them still qualified to play next season they should be ready for a real challenge.

The second team were beaten 42-37.
