THIEVES stole from six lockers in the changing rooms at the town's Dolphin Leisure Centre.

Money, mobile phones, car keys, credit cards and clothes were among the items taken last Monday afternoon.

One man was left with no clothes, towel or money.

Mum, Clare Stanton, who had taken her son swimming, was furious when she discovered thieves had stolen her purse containing both her and her husband's bank cards and around £25 in cash.

"I think it's disgusting that this is what we can expect when we go swimming. The staff at the centre didn't seem to care and just said all belongings were left at our own risk."

The thefts occurred at the School Drive centre at around 12.30pm on Monday. It is believed the thieves left by an open fire exit, which leads into the car park.

Police have not ruled out reports that a master key was used to break-in to the lockers.

Sergeant Mike Patz said: "We are advising people not to leave high value items in lockers, including credit cards."

"If people see anyone acting suspiciously in the changing rooms they should make staff aware immediately.

"Bromsgrove District Council and the police are looking into ways of improving the security at the centre in the future," he added.

Robbie Hazelhurst, head of leisure services at Bromsgrove District Council, said: "We are working closely with the police to identify any potential culprits and they are examining CCTV footage for evidence.

"When the refurbishment of the Dolphin Centre is complete we will have further security measures, such as CCTV cameras watching the locker area."

"I must stress nearly half a million people use the Dolphin Centre on a yearly basis and the levels of crime are not very high," he added.
