LUCTONIANS booked themselves a place in the final of the North Midlands Cup when they defeated the holders Malvern 21-18 in a crunching semi-final clash at Mortimer Park.
In a fast and furious opening Malvern's Richard Fleming and Luctonians' Jeremy Wheadon swapped penalties.
A sustained home attack created space for centre Roger Chilman to cross for an unconverted corner try but Mark Eastwood charged over to level for the cup holders. Hooker Chris Pemble was driven over to put Malvern ahead, but before Sam Hardcastle could convert, visiting skipper Vince Hill was dismissed for stamping. James Owen crossed to close the gap for Luctonians, and after Wheadon had edged them ahead with his second penalty, Mark Panniers raced 75 metres for a decisive home try. Hardcastle kicked a second penalty but Luctonians held out for their first final appearance since 1973.
