NETBALL: Worcestershire successfully escaped the threat of relegation from English Counties League Division Two with a 40-28 win over Hampshire North.
Coach Steve McCleod brought in Nina Russell and Helen Webb with the county making a bright start to build up an 8-0 lead.
It helped settle a nervous home side though Hampshire had narrowed the lead to 11-6 by the end of the first quarter.
Worcestershire led 21-11 at half-time and carried a 32-18 lead into the final section despite a minor comeback.
Nerves crept in again for the county who were out-scored by Hampshire for the first time but it was too little too late.
A tired but jubilant county knew their Division Two place was safe for another year.
There was also a big victory for the U-18s who hammered under-strength Hampshire North 55-23.
The teenagers have had a successful season but they may have topped their division but for two defeats in win-able games.
Meanwhile, Worcestershire's seconds lost 42-37 and the U-16s were defeated narrowly 34-32.
The juniors should be ready to mount a real challenge next season as many of the players are still available at U-16s level.
