THE men in red were in fine voice on Saturday, when again we were treated to a broad selection of songs.
They began with some Welsh songs, including the gentle Nant Y Mynydd featuring solo tenor Harry Lewis, the choir's deputy MD, and Deus Salutis, dedicated to the late Lawrence Wall, who died recently.
I was delighted the choir included Malotte's wonderful setting of the Lord's Prayer, and their version of Bring Him Home from Les Miserables was absolutely beautiful.
With former MD Steve Block in the audience, the choir really pulled out all the stops in his arrangement of Bohemian Rhapsody, a performance which I am sure pleased him.
The programme ended with Mr Block's Miller Medley which really got everyone swinging and "In the Mood". In this medley I particularly enjoyed Moonlight Serenade - perhaps they will do a longer version one day.
The guest singer was mezzo soprano Elizabeth Pritchard, who had a good voice, but was unable to "sell" a song. She was far too laid back in Can't Help Lovin' That Man Of Mine from Showboat, and beaty numbers such as I Got Rhythm and Can't Take That Away From Me were totally wrong for her. Some of the songs were also keyed too high for her.
On the plus side was a lovely version of O Rest in the Lord, a good performance of Summertime and a short comedy song called Someone Is Sending Me Flowers, which was fun.
The night certainly belonged to the men, who did not disappoint. VJS
