AN Evesham woman is warning people to be on their guard after her mobile phone was stolen in a restaurant.

The woman, whose identity is being protected by the Evesham Journal, said the incident happened on Tuesday night at Maheen's restaurant on Bridge Street. Two men came in and approached the group's table.

The woman said: "One man came up behind my friend with a piece of paper in his hand. He said he needed to know where the station was."

She added: "The other man came over and was being very loud to put everyone's attention on him. By this point his friend put his piece of paper down on the table over my phone and stole it."

The woman only realised the phone had gone after the men had left the restaurant.

She added: "At the end of the day you do not expect something like that to happen. I want to warn people about what might be going on."

The woman described the men as being of east European origin, in their mid-20s, and of medium build. She also said they were quite scruffy.

Police crime risk manager PC Mike Stephenson said people should keep their mobile phones out of public view and never use it if they feel unsafe.

He added: "Always use the PIN number to block access to the phone when it is switched off."

Leaflets about mobile phone safety are available at all police stations. If anyone has any further information about the theft on Tuesday night they should contact PC Jamie Scarrott on 08457 444 888 quoting 183C/010403.
