IF the phrase "striking a balance" is bandied about much more by both sides of an argument, I shall become upset. It has become meaningless since no-one says what that balance is.
There is little balance in what the economic development section at MHDC claims about the present proposals to develop the marina site in Upton.
The author of its report says: it "thoroughly" supports it, it "will benefit the economy", "the accommodation provision is year round", the application is a "rare opportunity" and "would improve the quality of district facilities", it would "develop the theme of excellence" and "it would support the council's vision of ensuring that a difference is made for the good of the district".
Townspeople are concerned about the good of the town.
The economic development section fully supports this "very important application which will provide huge benefits". It asks the planning section to support it due to the "positive contributions" which the proposal will "undoubtedly achieve".
Interestingly, planning officers did not spot the extent of these "huge benefits" when concluding there would also be negative contributions as a result of this development. It seems to present a schizophrenic and irresponsible approach on the part of MHDC that economic development "thoroughly" supports while planning recommends refusal. There needs to be one corporate voice on such a development which could overwhelm town life.
Economic development, if it wishes to be taken seriously, ought also to go a step further to acknowledge flooding problems. This report read more like PR than analysis.
