MALVERN Chess Club played Halesowen in Division One of the County League and met some strong opposition losing three games and drawing three.

Unusually it was the centre boards who lost and the top and lower boards who drew, making the final score 1-4.

Results - Board 1: B Turner - S Fishburne, 2: G Herbert 0-1 A Crombleholme, 3: I Clarke 0-1 J Edge, 4: J Knee 0-1 M Bethal, 5: M Ginger - Dale Jackson, 6: S Tombs - A Ambrose.

On board one Brian Turner established a special advantage and pressure on the queen's side against Black's Kings Indian. An unusual rook manoeuvre gave black counter play and a draw was agreed as neither side could make further progress.

John Knee, on board four, chose an incorrect variation of the Caro-Kann Defence and found his king trapped in the centre.

On board five Black played a Pirc and obtained some pressure against Maurice Ginger's centre. Maurice forced a relieving exchange then set up a difficult threat which black managed to answer. The heavy pieces were then exchanged to leave a level position and a draw was agreed.

Sam Tombs, on board six, played a Sicilian Dragon. Both players played the standard dragon attacks precisely and a draw was agreed.
