Horrible as war is, there are frequent off-beat and even humorous incidents. In the 1939-45 war my elder brothers used to fall about laughing at Lord Haw-Haw on the radio. The authorities failed to see the joke.
ITMA, George Formby and Gracie Fields also kept us amused in troubled times.
On war as a way of settling differences, we seem no closer to finding an alternative than we were on leaving the caves. The weapons have just become bigger.
