A DRIVE to boost the number of tourists visiting Herefordshire and Worcestershire has been announced by regional development agency Advantage West Midlands (AWM).
The move, in conjunction with regional tourist board Visit Heart of England, was made in response to Government plans, announced in May 2002, to reform the managing and marketing of tourism in England.
At that time the Government announced Regional Development Agencies would provide the strategic leadership for tourism.
Now, AWM is setting up a strategic tourism board to develop ways of attracting more tourists to the West Midlands and to ensure visitors enjoy the best possible experiences while here.
"The strategy that AWM will develop by October this year will help to steer the continuing work of Visit Heart of England and other bodies," said a spokesman for AWM.
"Visit Heart of England will continue to work with AWM to promote the Midlands and to help businesses market themselves.
"The organisation will continue to provide services to improve quality, deliver training, and offer advice to local authority and private sector tourism operators.
Sir William Lawrence, chairman of Visit Heart of England, said: "I welcome the recognition that has been given to tourism as a key player in regional economic development."
