SEVENTEEN sheep were killed as a tractor's trailer jack-knifed at a Worcester roundabout this morning.

Though the driver was unscathed, the animals died as the container separated from the trailer and on to a grass verge at the Nunnery Way roundabout, Worcester.

The road was temporarily blocked at the island between Swinesherd Way and Nunnery Way as motorists stopped to watch.

Alerted

Several motorists alerted the police with mobile phones, and a vet was called to the scene.

The sheep were travelling to Worcester cattle market when the incident happened, at about 9.30am.

The farmer, Richard Andrews, of Winchcombe, near Evesham, took the remaining 74 sheep to market.

The dead sheep were taken away separately.

RSPCA and trading standards remained at the scene investigating why the container broke loose from the trailer.
