NOT even the finest script writers in the world could have come up with this one.

What happened at the Glyn Mitchell Memorial Ground and Finstall Park last Saturday will surely go down as one of the most memorable days local rugby has ever seen.

The two matches provided it all - drama, tension, a twist in the tale, and a bit of nudity for good measure.

At Droitwich, at least 150 people turned up to see if Spa could beat Old Yardleians by the eight-point margin needed for promotion from Midlands Four West (South).

Eight miles up the road, at Finstall Park, hundreds of fans gathered in the hope Bromsgrove could defeat Malvern and with it survive relegation from Midlands One - something unthinkable just two months ago.

But no-one could have predicted the way it all panned out.

Bromsgrove were within a single kick of being relegated. That's how close it was. Jon Taylor's penalty, converted by Matt Birch, got them to within two points of Malvern at 24-22. David Stout's side were then awarded a penalty and how fitting then that Birch, the man Bromsgrove have come to rely on for his kicking expertise, should be entrusted with the singularly most important kick in the club's history.

He did not disappoint as the ball sailed over to be met with the final whistle and a 25-24 home victory.

Yet it was not until news filtered through of Hinckley's single-point defeat at Leicester, a result that propelled Town two places, that Bromsgrove could celebrate.

Now turn the clock back 20 minutes and jump to Droitwich. Needing to win by eight clear points, Spa led 17-8. Tension was unbearably high and Spa weren't making life easy on themselves by having two men sent to the sin bin for off-the-ball incidents.

But they held on, dug deep and fought off, sometimes literally, everything Old Yardleians threw at them. The final whistle brought with it uncontrolled ecstasy, to the point of two male fans stripping naked and wrestling in the middle of the pitch.

So, as it was, both teams came up trumps in their own way. It doesn't get any better than that.
