REGARDING Paul H Griffiths' letter (You Say, April 3) I would point out that the EU Constitution is a difficult concept with which to engage the public.

For one thing, it has a high boredom threshold. This is not a subject that will be bandied about in the pub but we are looking at absolute power for the European Union via its Constitution.

The danger for a freedom-loving people is that in the New Europe power in the judicial, monetary, economic, commercial, diplomatic and military fields will be enjoyed without proper democratic checks.

The council, meeting in secret and with no national parliamentary veto, will produce laws.

Other powers will be shared by the unelected bureaucrats in the Commission, the European Central Bankers in Frankfurt and the politically correct Judges in Strasbourg.

The European Parliament will continue to be the only "parliament" in the democratic (?) world which does not enjoy legislative power and is unable to form a "government".

It can only table amendments. Consequently the European Union will become a law unto itself, which has been the game plan for 50 years.

Tony Blair has already stated that there will not be a referendum on the EU Constitution even though New Labour has no mandate to sign our country away.

Like so many of our governments before them, they dare not ask the people. They are afraid of the answer.

Debate away, Paul H Griffiths. I can hardly wait.
