BROMSGROVE women, who believe disgraced Barnt Green doctor Andrew Gbinigie has mistreated them, are being asked to step forward and help bring him to justice.

Across the West Midlands 25 women have come forward with a catalogue of horror stories about the consultant gynaecologist who they claim 'butchered' one of his patients. They have formed an action group, Women Fighting for Faith, and hope to reach out to women in Bromsgrove who may have suffered at the hands of the Nigerian-trained doctor.

Nicola Evans, of Kingswinford, is spearheading the campaign to have Dr Gbinigie struck off the medical register.

"There may be women out there who have been mistreated by this doctor and feel very lonely and isolated. We are working not only to bring him to justice but to offer support too."

Last month, the General Medical Council (GMC) found Dr Gbinigie guilty of serious professional misconduct.

They heard how Dr Gbinigie had left a 21-year-old woman in need of life-saving surgery after bungling an abortion while working at a Birmingham clinic. But the council deemed him fit to continue practising.

Women Fighting for Faith has enlisted the help of solicitors Alexander Harris to reopen an investigation into the doctor. They have specialist experience of medical cases, including bringing serial killer Dr Harold Shipman to justice.

"Ideally, we would like to see Dr Gbinigie in jail but at the least struck off the medial register," said Nicola.

The mum-of-five first came in to contact with the doctor, who is registered in Mearse Lane, in October 1998 when she had a sterilisation procedure. But 17 months later she fell pregnant.

"I was horrified, I just did not know what was going on and I became clinically depressed," she said. Nicola was offered an abortion, again by Dr Gbinigie, who said he would carry out another sterilisation operation at the same time. However, Nicola decided to go ahead with the pregnancy and now has a beautiful two-year-old daughter.

She added: "I call her my miracle baby. At least one good thing has come out of this awful mess."

The Advertiser/Messenger tried to contact Dr Gbinigie before we went to press.
