A CLASH over the future of markets in Droitwich Spa has led a key business leader to resign.

Richard Brighton announced on Monday his intention to quit Droitwich Spa Association for Retail, Tourism and Services (DARTS).

A letter to members revealed the chairman's anger at Wychavon District Council proposals for a 25 stall market by Waitrose supermarket developers.

Mr Brighton says the move came days after he struck a long-awaited deal with EG Skett and Co for a fortnightly 30 stall Saturday market in Victoria Square. He hoped Wychavon would support a 12-month trial but says it only granted six months' permission - because the authority wants its own proposals in place by Christmas.

After further talks, Mr Brighton still expects Sketts to come to Droitwich but said: "I feel undermined and I'm making a stand to ensure DARTS is respected as an equal partner."

Wychavon's town centres officer, Lew Hammond, praised Brighton's 'sterling' work and urged him to reconsider. He confirmed Wychavon's plans re-accommodate stallholders when the indoor market is bulldozed to make way for Waitrose. It hopes to stage markets on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays but Mr Hammond said this is not setting out to compete with the fortnightly market.

However, there could be more to Mr Brighton's resignation. His letter also recalls difficulties organising canals restoration talks and the many committee roles he has been forced to fill.

"I have spent considerable time and effort attempting to raise the profile and status of DARTS," it reads. "This latest market fiasco is a slap in the face for DARTS."

DARTS was due to meet last night to discuss the decision. It's believed Salters Shopping Centre boss Kevin O'Hara will step in temporarily.
