MUSIC SOCIETY: Members and visitors were taken both sides of the conductor's batten on Friday, April 11. As the conductor was none other than Mr David Curtiss - leader and conductor of the Swan Orchestra at Stratford it was a well presented and interesting evening.
Mr Curtiss defined what is an orchestra and looked at all the aspects of running and managing one including funding - charity status and interface with the Arts Council. It gave a very different view to that of a group of musicians being lead by someone who waves a wand and shakes hands with the leader of the orchestra. The second part of the evening was given to excerpts of such composers as Vaughan Williams Tipit and Britten all of whose music had recently been included in a programme given by The Orchestra of the Swan.
Members and visitors are asked to note the following amendments to programme: Friday, May 16 - My Musical enthusiasms and how they have changed by Mr Digby Day; Friday, June 20 - A Harp recital given by Margaret Wright; Friday, September 19 - AGM and the Oxford Operatic Society. All of these will be worth attending. Visitors are welcome.
