THE biggest event of the European Year of Disabled People promises to be the Above and Beyond Festival and Conference, a three-day bonanza of performance, exhibition and debate at Cheltenham Town Hall from September 19-21.

Above and Beyond aims to bring local arts audiences a truly global programme, featuring artists from Canada and the US, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Arts specialists from all over Britain will be beating a path to Cheltenham to participate in an event which cod change views of disability culture.

EQUATA, which hosts the event, is the regional disability arts agency for the South West. Director Moya Harris has tracked down a global bill of artists to create and event which she believes will put the region on the cultural map.

She explained: "For the cutting edge of disability culture people traditionally look to London and other big cities. In September, just for a change, people will be looking to Gloucestershire and seeing that we have connected into a global network of disabled artists."
