WITH a change to warmer airs, a strong breeze from the south and a dry afternoon despite the weatherman's warning, competition could not have been much better at Evesham Sailing Club last Sunday.
On an excellent course which kept everybody on their toes, Simon and Adam Styles proved they were relishing the conditions and claimed first place in both races.
The first race, part of the pursuit series, held over the hour saw Mike Long take an early lead which he held onto for the best part of 40 minutes but the Styles stuck to their task and slowly overhauled him.
Once in the lead they were not to be threatened and despite the best efforts of all the crews, eventually took a comfortable first spot.
The second race of the afternoon, one of the Lionel Cooke Trophy events, saw everybody make much greater efforts to hold the Styles in check. Ian Edwards, John Pickford and Peter Green all led in turn and each believed they had broken away into a winning position but it was not to be.
Simon Styles with his son Adam knew they had the speed to win and by holding their nerve fought through to take the lead and again once in front they were away. Everybody else could only watch them disappear to take first place after an excellent afternoon's sport.
