ADVICE has been issued to mobile phone users in Droitwich Spa following a recent surge in handset thefts.
Police working in the town and across south Worcestershire have investigated nearly 400 stolen mobile phones this year.
Residents, particularly youngsters, are being urged by West Mercia Constabulary to take simple steps to safeguard their property.
Many thefts are as a result of handsets being left unattended and used in crowded places according to crime risk manager PC Mike Stephenson.
"So far this year, around 377 mobile phones have been stolen in the South Worcestershire division," he said.
"However, people should not be concerned that this indicates how many phones were stolen as result of street crime - many have been lost, left unattended or taken from bags or cars."
By reporting the incident to police and providing officers with the 15-digit serial or IMEI number, it helps them trace the phone more quickly. The IMEI numbers can be found by keying in *#06# or looking behind the battery of the phone.
PC Stephenson added: "Always use the PIN number to block access to the phone when it is turned off.
"Remember to keep your phone out of view from the public, keep on your person at all times and be aware of what is around you.
"If you feel unsafe or are in a crowded area, refrain from using your mobile phone."
Advice leaflets are available at Droitwich police station in Ombersley Street East.
