South Worcestershire police are advising members of the public to protect their property against thieves.

Crime Risk Manager PC Mike Stephenson said the light nights and good weather can make life easier for raiders.

"As the nights get lighter and the weather improves, people very often leave their front doors unlocked," he said.

"Some UPVC doors don't have a lock that automatically locks the doors when it's shut leaving your home vulnerable. There have been a number of break-ins lately where doors have been left insecure and purses, phones or car keys have been stolen.

He added that sheds are often targeted at this time of year by thieves who want to get their hands on expensive gardening equipment, and this is sometimes an area that is neglected when it comes to crime prevention.

"You should never leave a shed or garage unlocked and make sure that the doors are solid enough not to be kicked in. Ladders should be locked either in the garage if possible, but if you have to leave them outside, chain them horizontally to a drainpipe.

"If you have a lot of expensive tools consider fitting steel boxes and lock them to the floor.

"Plants can often deter a would-be-thief from getting into your garden. If they have to get through prickly bushes to get into your garden they will think again."

He said spending money on security measures can seem daunting but it is a good investment that will last a long time and can add to the value of your property.

"If you are going out, always lock the door and close the windows - even if it's just for a short time. When you're in the back garden, make sure your front door is locked.

"Window locks, especially on older windows, will help stop people getting in and remember, a burglar is less likely to break in if they have to smash a window.

Added PC Stephenson : "If you have deadlocks, use them. They make it harder for a thief to get out again. But don't leave the key near the door or in an obvious place.

"Visible burglar alarms, good lighting and carefully directed security lighting can put burglars off. But make sure that lights don't disturb your neighbours and that alarms turn off after 20 minutes."
