Worcester's Mayor will have to travel to Gloucester tomorrow because there is no official celebration of St George in the Faithful City on the saint's day.

Mayor Robert Rowden will be in Gloucester for a special saint's day service.

Coun Rowden will have to wait four days for the civic celebration of St George at Worcester Cathedral on Sunday, April 27.

St George is also the patron saint of Scouts and following the service there will be a march by hundreds of Hereford and Worcester Scouts, Cub Scouts and Beavers through the city culminating in a salute at the Guildhall.

"The Irish celebrate St Patrick's Day and the Welsh St David's Day but the English seem to be rather relaxed about it," said Coun Rowden.

Back in the 1960s Coun Rowden was a member of the Royal Society of St George, but did not renew his membership after the subscription went up from 10/6d to a guinea!

"From a personal point of view I would like to see more done for St George's Day," he said.

Some pubs, however, will be marking the occasion. For example, patrons can enjoy a pint of England's Pride made by St George's Brewery in Callow End with traditional English food at the Swan with Two Nicks in New Street.

There will also be celebrations at The Talbot in Knightwick. The pub is promising an evening of feasting, singing of patriotic songs and sword dancing from 7.30pm.

"Everyone celebrates St Patrick's Day and the Scottish and the Welsh make the most of their saints days, but everyone seems to forget about St George," said Wiz Clift, owner and chef at The Talbot.

"So, we always try to do something special to celebrate."
