Caretaker manager Brendan Hackett hopes to be named as the new boss of Stourport Swifts by the end of the week.

The former Worcester City and Stourbridge player is one of a host of applicants for the Walshes Meadow job.

And Hackett did his chances no harm at all by guiding the team to a 1-1 Dr Martens Western Division draw at home to Bedworth United.

Swifts had conceded 11 goals in their previous two games and Hackett drafted in goalkeeper Derek Dudley for his first match of the season.

The former West Brom and Telford United stopper twice denied the visitors in the opening minutes, saving from Ben Steane and Chris Partridge.

And Dudley then pulled off a brilliant fingertip save on the stroke of half-time to keep out Steane's swirling free-kick.

It arrived after the pair collided on the edge of the area - a clash that prompted calls for a red card but Dudley escaped with a yellow.

Both sides had found the net by then with honours even at the end of a closely fought first half.

Swifts were first to strike when Alex Cowley took the ball inside his marker before firing left-footed into the bottom corner on 18 minutes.

Bedworth's response 20 minutes later came from Scott McGregor who volleyed into the net from the edge of the area.

Swifts had chances to grab all three points after the break, Jan Mulders heading over from three yards before Lee Booth nodded against the crossbar.

The final minutes saw Swifts substitute Tim Langford fire just over, while at the other end Partridge steered an effort just wide of the Stourport goal.
