WITH little but pride to play for Redditch went down to a second half Mark Peters penalty at the Moat Ground.
Former Leeds United defender Jon Newsome was seeing his charges in their first home league game and saw an even match.
With thoughts turning to next season it was hardly end to end stuff but United could have taken an early lead in the first minute when a Stuart Evans back pass fell short but Gresley keeper James Lindley smothered at Chris Hill's feet.
The erratic Lindley just did enough to frustrate Danks seven minutes later as the visitors started brightly.
Owen James headed a Chris Gray free kick over a stranded Neil Olden but Dave Whittaker could not put power into his header and Richard Field cleared off the line in the 21st minute.
Evans had to whip the ball off Hill's feet on 25 minutes and within a minute Rovers were denied by the top of the crossbar as Olden came and missed a Richard Wardle free kick and Barry Woolley's header dropped onto the woodwork.
Olden had to be at his best to block point blank from Andy Bourne two minutes before the break after the Gresley midfielder rounded Nigel Niblett in the area.
Chances dried up after the interval with Olden hesitating over a Gray through ball in the 61st minute.
Bourne's tackle saw the ball squirt to sub Simon Tucker but Richard Beale was on hand to clear.
Two minutes later a Matty Hall corner almost went straight in but Gray cleared at the far post and Peters scored the winner from the spot in the 71st minute.
Whitakker took a Bourne pass into the box before being unceremoniously dumped in the box by Olden, who was lucky to escape a red card.
