ANDREW Davies captured a championship-best 5-79 to earn Glamorgan the better of a rain-hit draw against promotion-chasing Worcestershire at Cardiff.

The right-arm seamer grabbed his first five-wicket haul in a championship innings as Glamorgan prevented their opponents from gaining maximum batting points.

After dismissing Worcestershire for 381 to gain a first-innings lead of 66, the game was almost certainly doomed to a predictable draw and Glamorgan batted out time, reaching 181-2 before bad light halted play 50 minutes before the scheduled close.

Worcestershire resumed their first innings on 288-3 in reply to Glamorgan's 447 with their main objective to reach 400 and maximum batting bonus points.

Stephen Peters, 108 not out overnight, and Vikram Solanki (83no) started in aggressive mode to extend their fourth-wicket stand to 167 before the dismissal of Solanki for 94 sparked a major batting collapse.

From a healthy 313-3, Worcestershire lost their last seven wickets for just 68 runs and missed out on a fifth batting point which could prove crucial at the end of the season.

Davies and Owen Parkin did the damage despite a defiant knock of 26 by wicketkeeper Jamie Pipe who was last man out.

With the match destined for a draw, Glamorgan were left to negotiate one over before lunch and two sessions.

Opener Ian Thomas made only two before he edged an attempted cover drive off Alamgir Sheriyar to Pipe but Maynard and David Hemp suffered few alarms in adding 54 for the second wicket.

Maynard made a fluent 31 before he played a back-foot drive off Kabir Ali to Peters at point.

With the game drifting to a tame conclusion, Hemp (69no) and Mike Powell (60no) capitalised on the chance to improve their averages with an unbroken third-wicket stand of 121.
