DEAR EDITOR -- I am writing to express my frustration and irritation at the £1 daily charge being introduced at Bromsgrove railway station.

There has been a need for increased parking for many years and I completely understand the irritation that must be felt by Aston Fields residents having cars parked on their doorsteps. But charging to use the car-park will not encourage any-one to use it.

The train fare into Birmingham is not cheap and an extra £1 a day travel cost is more than my annual pay-rise.

I will not pay until there is simply no-where left to park. The planned yellow lines will simply move the problem, not resolve it.

I would like to know how charging can be justified when the official line is to encourage people to use public transport. Increasing the cost to use will push people like me, with cars, to drive to work instead.

In the event of a train not turning up, thus necessitating people finding alternative ways into work if they don't wish to be excessively late, who will refund the car-park charge? Presumably, no one because obviously to live in Bromsgrove we must be made of money!

May I also to take the opportunity to express amazement at how the car park has been created. I assume it has cost an unnecessary amount of money. What with slaloms, roundabouts and parking for disabled people who couldn't travel by train (How would they get over the footbridge?) there have only been five or so extra spaces created . That's by my calculation on how many cars used to park along station approach.

Mrs C Richmond,

Bromsgrove.
