AM I the only resident of Worcester who is less than enthusiastic about the Quayhead fountain?
I note that it is "award-winning". In my experience, this usually means that some trade association or professional body is praising one of its own practitioners. I've no doubt the Giffard Hotel and the Lychgate development were "award winning" in the 1960s.
This fountain would be better placed in an industrial park. If we must have a fountain, surely the ideal spot would be on the Cathedral roundabout - but not this uninspiring design, of course.
The South Quay is an historic area of the city. Here stood the original Worcester Porcelain Works and later, Dents glove factory. The trows and long boats used to load their goods and a branch railway line ran along the quayside.
Surely these things and their workers need some permanent memorial in the area?
To put a pathetic fountain alongside England's greatest river with its powerful natural forces and lively activity is the most inappropriate use for this site I can think of.
While I support the Duckworth Trust in their efforts to improve our city, the money given for this folly would have been better spent on the other bank of the river clearing scrub so that the Cathedral can be seen from Bromwich Parade. At present, in summer, it is invisible from most angles.
