SOCIAL isolation experienced by lonely Spa mums is being tackled by a new town organisation.

The Droitwich Spa Women's Healthy Living Project has launched to help parents who are new to the area or feel cut off from their community.

Project manager Alison Nicholas hopes to run courses for mums around the town and help women make new friends.

She said: "Droitwich Spa has a large commuter belt which is continuing to expand.

"There are a substantial number of women who have moved to the area with their partners and have since had children and stay at home.

"Consequently they may have no family links or long-term friends in the area."

She pointed out that there are women isolated because of where they live and Alison named Chawson as one of the areas where the project should help women make contacts and seek peer support.

She added that isolation can lead to depression and hopes this new group could provide an alternative to anti-depressant drugs that are often given out by GPs.

The group is based at the Old Library Centre, in Ombersley Street East but its hoped that events, titled Mums' Matters, will take place at venues across Droitwich.

Each course will be ten to 12 weeks long, one day per week.

Topics will include health, beauty, stress management, diet and even self-defence. Sessions will be run by different experts each week and a creche will be available for pre-school children.

The first classes kick off on Tuesday April 29, at Sacred Heart RC Church Hall, off Worcester Road.
