A MAN detained his brother in a desperate bid to keep him away from drugs, a court has heard.
Police charged Robert Want with kidnapping, after a concerned passer-by saw him bundling his brother, Peter, into the back of his car, Worcester magistrates heard yesterday.
However, the case against Mr Want, of Bunns Road, St Peter's, Worcester was dismissed after the court heard he had committed the act purely in his brother's best interests.
David Taylor, defending the 31-year-old, explained the move was an unsuccessful attempt to help his brother go "cold turkey" - keeping him away from drugs until his addiction stopped.
"This was a man acting out of good motives," he said.
Intention
"Unfortunately, he alarmed somebody enough for them to call the police but his only intention was to help his brother."
District Judge Michael Kelly dismissed the charge after he heard the mitigation.
"I don't think that any punishment is appropriate in this case," he said.
"You cannot act this way, however good your motives, but the inconvenience of coming to court is enough.
"If your brother does not want the matter to proceed any further I see no reason for it to do so, especially as this must already be a very difficult time for your family."
Mr Want confirmed that drugs remained a problem for his brother, before he thanked Judge Kelly and left the court.
