THE question of whether Malvern Urban District Council - as the local authority was then - should become a Mun-icipal Borough was much in the news 50 years ago.

The council agreed that it should present a petition to the Queen, requesting that a "charter of incorporation" to create the borough be granted.

The council clerk, J Bulman, told the elected members: "The advantages Malvern can expect to achieve through obtaining borough status are almost entirely in relation to status.

"So far as functions are concerned, there would be very little difference."

But the Gazette was in no doubt this was a matter "which should admit of no dissension".

"It is most heartily desirable that at the earliest possible moment Malvern should achieve the status of a borough which would permit of the election of a mayor and aldermen - civic dignitaries worthy of her position as an important inland resort," the paper said.
