MALVERN'S first literary festival opened successfully 50 years ago, reported the Malvern Gazette.
Among the guests was Christina Foyle, of the famous London bookshop, who spoke about Foyle's Literary Luncheons. Among the memorable speakers at these events, which had then been going for 23 years, were Haile Selassie, the emperor of Abyssinia, and Lady Astor.
She also recalled that Haig, the notorious acid-bath murderer, sometimes used to take his victims to the events.
Other well-known writers at the festival were John Moore, J B Priestley and H R Trevor-Roper.
