MALVERN TOWN 0, WELLINGTON 2
Malvern Town crashed out of the Worcester Royal Infir-mary Cup at the semi-final stage against Wellington on Wednesday night.
The Infirmary Cup was seen as the last chance to earn some silverware for Malvern, during a season which only four weeks ago had promised so much.
Town were hampered by injuries and two players were cup tied. The decision to gamble on the fitness of skipper Dean Roberts didn't pay off, when Town's leading scorer broke down after only ten minutes.
Five minutes later a Wellington player rose unchallenged from a corner to head home a full 10 yards out from goal.
If the visitors rarely threatened for the remainder of the half then neither did Town, although Rik Halion saw a volley well saved by the visiting goalkeeper, and Billy Davis, making his first start since Christmas, narrowly lobbed over the bar.
The second period was even worse than the first, with Town creating very little, their best chance again falling to Davis, but this time he could not get enough momentum on the ball and his 69th minute shot was easily blocked.
With 20 minutes left, Wellington broke down the right and a low cross into the six yard box presented the visitors with the easiest of chances, to claim their final place against Ledbury.
Town general manager Richard Anson said: "We have been dreadful during our previous three home league matches and on Wednesday were simply inept.
"I have taken the necessary action as to what I see is an appropriate management response to what happened on Wednesday, and if that means certain players do not play for the club again this season, or if ever, then frankly, I couldn't care less.
"I am not here to massage egos, we provide a hell of a lot for our players, more I believe than possibly any other club in the league, and I don't think we ask for a huge amount in return."
On Saturday Town face a number of injury problems for the trip to fourth placed Little Drayton Rangers (2.45pm), Dean Roberts is a definite non starter, while Nick Clayton, Steve Walker and Des Cox are all doubtful.
Town Boss Neil Hunt will select from: Watson, Chalmers, Cannon, Walker, Clayton, Palmer, Walton, Taylor, Goodman, Spiers, Halion, Owen, Davis, Cox, Johnson, Hooper and Willetts.
