PAT Lyons believes Worcester City manager John Barton deserves credit for coping with the spate of injuries that have decimated the squad since Christmas.
The St George's Lane boss has seen City's Dr Martens Premier Division title challenge crumble as injuries deprived him of key players at various times in recent months.
First choice performers such as Stewart Hadley, Mark Owen, David Holmes, John Snape, David Foy and Lyons himself have all been sidelined for lengthy spells, restricting Barton's options.
"I've been told the squad has improved on last year and at the start of the season you could see how well we did," said Lyons.
"But while you might not miss one or two key players even Manchester United would struggle if they lost three or four of their best players as we have.
"I think John Barton deserves a lot of credit for trying to keep everybody on their toes and bringing in some of the younger lads.
"It's been trying circumstances but he's handled it well."
Lyons admits the injuries have taken their toll on the spirit within the dressing room with a mood of optimism before Christmas giving way to one of frustration.
"I think there is a different spirit in the camp to the start of the season and everyone is a little deflated," he said.
"The players on the pitch look up and see up to eight players injured in the stand then the injured players are wishing we could be out there with them and it's just disappointing."
Lyons is awaiting keyhole surgery to clear up a hip flexor muscle problem and has set his sights on preparing for next season.
"I'm sick of missing games but once I've had the operation I will be all set for next year," he said.
"I've spoken to John and he understands the situation and has told me to get myself fit."
City unveil their new kit for next season later today, wearing their new white shirt with a blue pin stripe against Grantham Town in their final Dr Martens Premier Division home clash of the season.
City's pre-season trip to Belgium to play Premier League side KSK Beveren has been put back a week and will now be played on Saturday, July 19 (5pm kick-off).
Any supporters intending to travel to the game should inform the club of their intention to travel.
