BROMSGROVE Rovers spoiled Weston-super-Mare's promotion party with a 1-0 win at Woodspring Park in the Dr Martens Western Division.

The well-deserved victory takes Rovers back into third place with one game remaining.

Bromsgrove were the more enterprising side and signalled their attentions, straight from the kick-off as Richard Burgess shot at goal after just a few seconds.

Rovers' keeper Jim McGettrick was then called into action turning a Michael Jackson free kick over the bar.

Bromsgrove opened the scoring on 14 minutes. Mike Kilgour was booked after felling Les Palmer on the edge of the box, and Grant Beckett curled a David Beckham-like free kick into the top corner of the net with goalkeeper Stuart Jones rooted to the spot.

Weston responded with Jody Bevan and Lewis Haldane sending shots over Bromsgrove's crossbar.

For Rovers Paul Danks clipped the crossbar with his cross shot and the ball rebounded to safety, while Palmer's snap-shot was deflected by Anthony Hopkins and rolled agonizingly past the upright.

Rovers resumed after the interval still well in command, Jones saving at the feet of Burgess.

Burgess flashed a shot across the face of goal, skimming the post by inches. Kevin Banner saw his shot saved by Jones' legs, and moments later Jones saved Burgess' effort at the foot of his post.

Banner surged through the Seagulls defence, and his curling shot beat Jones but crashed off the angle of post and bar.

A rare Weston attack late on saw McGettrick catch Danny O'Hagan's looping header under his crossbar to earn a hard working Rovers three points.
