Protesting Crabbs Cross householders have won a stay of execution on the proposed development of an 11-acre field which backs onto their homes.
The angry Yvonne Road residents claim that contractors' lorries moving onto the exclusive residential site will create havoc on their own doorsteps.
Now the councillors are to carry out a site inspection despite warnings of a possible court case if they delay permission any longer.
Officers fear that the company concerned could appeal and then sue for considerable costs.
Speculation on the future of the site - called the Brandon Land - has raged for about 15 years already.
