Tenbury United 1 Norton Celtic 0-
TENBURY paid a fitting tribute to recently deceased former club captain Justin Dipper by beating Kidderminster Premier League rivals Norton Celtic at Palmer's Meadow to win the Tenbury Hospital Cup.
It was exactly 50 years ago that Dipper led Tenbury to victory in that very competition and the present team fielded his grandsons Aaron and Ryan Morris.
It was an old-fashioned cup battle with most of the very competitive play confined to mid-field and real chances at a premium.
The best chance fell to the visitors mid-way through the first half when Tenbury lost possession in their own half, the Celtic striker racing clear only to be foiled by an excellent block from Tenbury goalkeeper Byron Davies who had moved quickly off his line.
Facing a brisk wind Tenbury were restricted to long-range shots from Karl Pearson, but in the final stages of the opening period they started to get on top.
Johnny Welsh and Ashley Botwood took control of mid-field and Tenbury gradually started to create chances with Pearson showing good anticipation to nip past a struggling defender and just fail to beat the goalkeeper with a neat lob.
Strikers George Pearson and Ryan Morris had struggled to get into the game but in the 82nd minute made a telling contribution when they combined to score the cup-winning goal.
Morris won a hard challenge in mid-field and slipped a ball through the Celtic defence for the alert Pearson to race clear and calmly slip the ball into the net .
