CHANGES will be made to controversial new markings on a busy traffic island if monitoring work currently taking place highlights any problems, highway bosses have pledged.

The new markings on the roundabout by Sainsbury's supermarket have prompted outrage from scores of people, including Redditch Council Leader David Cartwright, who branded them "absolutely pointless and ridiculous."

Redditch fire crews, who are stationed just yards from the island, have experienced problems attending emergency calls because of the congestion caused by the new markings.

But Worcestershire County Council highway chiefs, who agreed to the work in a bid to reduce the number of collisions, have hit back at the criticism, claiming it is premature.

The new road markings and signage at the roundabout are aimed at improving the level of information given to motorists.

And it is hoped by managing the position of vehicles, motorists using the roundabout can have more confidence in what fellow drivers are doing.

However, the county council is working closely with the police and fire chiefs to monitor the new markings.
