Fifty years of Springfield was celebrated by its past and present pupils with scavenger hunts, afternoon tea and a hat parade.

The Alice Ottley Junior School in Worcester has been based in Brittania Square since 1953. Before, it was used as a maternity nursing home during the Second World War.

Springfield was housed on The Tything along with its senior school until it was able to move to its present-day surroundings of gardens and playing fields.

As well as all the celebrations there is also an exhibition of memorabilia, including old school uniform, schoolbooks, craftwork, photographs and other written memories.

The Mayor of Worcester, Worcester City Councillor Robert Rowden, judged the Golden Jubilee hat parade. The theme was "gold" and all the girls went to town on their designs.

After a special celebratory lunch each girl was presented with a golden helium balloon.

"The current girls were talking about what the school might be like in another 50 years time," said Julia McCreath, of The Alice Ottley School.

"They were fascinated by the idea of having been going for 50 years.

"The old girls and former members of staff had a lovely time the day before. They couldn't stop talking and they'll be meeting up again.

"Everyone had a marvellous time."

Over the years the school has been developed including refurbishment of the cellars to provide extra teaching space.
