JUDO: A girls and seniors competition brought five gold medals for Samurai Judo Club on Saturday.

Emily Watson, Emma Butler, Lauren Underhill, Paul Clarke and Telford-based Kelly Edwards were all successful.

Super-lightweight Watson impressed in the U-28kg category, taking four maximum-point wins before winning a tough final against a Derbyshire girl with an early score and groundhold.

Edwards, who is at Samurai for extra coaching but is based at the Wrekin Star club, looked superb when winning gold in the U-40kg section.

The dedicated Butler flew into the U-57kg final and edged a tremendous battle with a Swansea girl to gain gold.

Underhill's best display in the over-57kg category saw her repeat the gold from six months ago, winning her semi in seven seconds and final in nine seconds.

Katherine Lloyd-Jones put in a spirited effort in the same section before finishing fifth.

In the senior ladies' lightweights, Kerrie Pitcock had a go in the U-59kg competition despite being only 45kg.

Pitcock scored a superb win against a Hereford player and then defeated club-mate Butler only for age and weight to finally tell in the final, meaning a well-earned silver. Butler added a bronze.

Underhill also entered the over-59kg division and threw her way superbly into the final only to lose to a much heavier Welsh player.

Emma Burgess made a welcome return to competition and took a bronze after losing to Underhill in the semis.

The other gold fell to Clarke who was Samurai's sole representative in the senior men.

He is looking an increasingly class act and gave a stylish display with four maximum-point wins despite giving a lot of weight away.

Clarke then headed off to a grading the next, gaining his senior top brown belt after beating three good players to confirm his ranking as best Samurai youth player.
